Intra-operative Errors Leading to Additional Eye Injuries

ID: exh63910
This stock medical exhibit describes an improperly performed vitrectomy. It features multiple cross-sections of an eye. The first image shows the pre-operative condition, with a retinal tear and detached retina. The second image shows the proper intra-operative condition, with the vitrector removing vitreous at the same rate that the inflow cannula inserts solution, maintaining appropriate intra-ocular pressure. The third image shows the actual intra-operative condition, where the vitrector is removing the vitreous, but the inflow cannula does not work, resulting in reduced pressure inside the eye. The final image shows the post-operative condition, with recurrence of the retinal detachment and tear, cloudy vitreous, and membrane formation.
