Embolism Formation

This stock medical exhibit shows embolism formation in a series of illustrations. The first illustration shows the path of an embolism from the lower extremity through the veins to the heart. The second illustration shows normal blood flow in a cut-away view of a vein. The third illustration shows the formation of a thrombus (blood clot) in a cut-away view of a vein. The fourth illustration shows a portion of the thrombus breaking loose and joining the bloodstream. The fifth illustration shows the embolus traveling through the heart into the lungs. The sixth illustration shows the lodging of the embolus in the pulmonary arteries, blocking blood flow and oxygen exchange in the lungs.
