It describes how an embolus can travel up the veins of the leg, into the IVC, and into the heart and lungs. An inset shows a cut-away view of one of these leg veins and explains that prior to the surgery, chronic DVT was held in check by the use of Coumadin, an anticoagulant. The final image is a more detailed cut-away view of the heart and lungs, showing the large clot in the pulmonary artery.
