This stock medical exhibit shows disc herniation in a series of illustrations. The first illustration shows the normal anatomy of the L4-5 intervertebral disc in an axial view, including the annulus fibrosus, nucleus pulposus, nerve root and cauda equina. The second illustration shows the nucleus pulposus of the L4-5 disc herniating through the annulus fibrosus and impinging on the nerve root. The third illustration shows the herniated nucleus pulposus moving medially toward the cauda equina. The fourth illustration shows the detached piece of herniated nucleus pulposus impinging on the cauda equina and the opposite nerve root.
