This medical animation depicts a total knee joint replacement (arthroplasty) surgery. Beginning with a view of a normal knee joint, the animation progresses to show the effects of osteoarthritis and chondromalacia on the joint surfaces of the tibia, femur and patella. Afterward, the joint surfaces are prepared for the surgical placement of an artificial knee joint (prosthesis). The last frame compares the repaired knee joint prosthetic with a post-surgical x-ray film.
