Anterior Lumbar Discectomy and Fusion

ID: exh61062a
This stock medical exhibit depicts five steps of an L5-S1 anterior discectomy and fusion procedure in graphic detail. First an incision is created exposing the lumbosacral spine. Next rongeurs and a ring curette are used to remove all disc material and vertebral endplates. Then a bone graft is harvested from the iliac crest and an intervertebral implant is packed with the harvested bone and inserted into the disc space. Finally screws are used to secure a plate to the vertebral bodies, completing the fusion.
