Leakage of Diverticular Sacs with Eventual Rupture and Peritonitis

ID: exh5021
This full color stock medical illustration depicts severe diverticultis and the progression towards acute peritonitis. An anterior cut-away view of the abdominal contents provides a reference point for the three enlargements shown on this exhibit. The first enlargement shows multiple diverticular sacs along the length of the sigmoid colon. The second enlargement shows on of the sacs leaking purulent material within the surrounding fat and causing an abscess to form. The final image shows the abscess ruptured and leaking purulent material into the surrounding tissues leading to a diagnosis of acute peritonitis.
