Lumbar Spine Fracture with Resulting Neurological Complications

ID: exh69804a
This exhibit begins with one sagittal (side cut-away) view of the lumbar spine illustrating the post-accident condition. This image reveals the burst fracture at the L1 level with retropulsion of fracture fragments back into the spinal canal resulting in compression of the spinal cord at the site of the conus medullaris. Also, one large lateral view of the lower torso and pelvis reveals the spine, bladder, rectum and major nerves shown transparently beneath the skin. A bright flash of red over the L1 region symbolizes the site of the injury. This red color courses down the exiting nerve roots, lumbar plexus and sacral plexus to the bladder, rectum, perineum and genitalia. Text labels list the various neurological deficits including the neurogenic bladder and bowel and the loss of sensation throughout the perineum and genitalia.
