Antibodies to Kell
Antibodies to Kell

This medical exhibit consist of three illustrations. Two illustrations show multiple red blood cells with multiple light blue colored antibody molecules attached to them. The multiple antibodies attached to the RBC’s and are splitting open. The antibodies are not drawn to scale with the red blood cells. The second illustration is a cutaway view of the abdomen of a pregnant woman. The fetus is 18 to 20 weeks old. Light blue particles that represent maternal antibodies are shown crossing through the placenta and umbilical cord and entering the fetus. Arrows clarify the direction of movement of the antibodies. The fetus' arm bones, leg bones, heart and arterial system (including the middle cerebral arteries) are visible within the baby. Labels pointing to the arterial system state that antibodies attack the red blood cells in the body. Label pointing to the long bones of the leg states that the antibodies interfere with hemopoiesis. A label pointing out when there are two few red blood cells in the baby, anemia is the result and the heart compensates by beating faster, leading to increased speed of blood flow in arteries.
